As part of its nationwide immigration enforcement plan, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is stepping up its removal of Central American individuals, families, and children. Many of these individuals arrived as part of a larger surge of Central American immigrants to the U.S., which has occurred due to widespread violence and poor economic conditions in countries such as Guatemala and El Salvador. Unfortunately, many of these individuals are suffering due process violations during their removal. For example, the Texas Observer details the plight of a Salvadoran mother who, along with her two children, was detained by ICE in early January, 2016. The woman had fled El Salvador with her children due to fears about their safety due to rampant gang activity and violence. She was picked up as part of a large raid targeting Central American immigrants. While in a Texas detention center, the woman suffered multiple uncontrolled seizures, but was not receiving proper medical care, despite repeated requests for medical attention. According to a doctor who examined the woman, she was not receiving the type of medical care that she needed, and her condition was being exacerbated by the stress of her detention and pending deportation. He recommended that the woman be immediately released. Although an immigration attorney was able to obtain a stay of removal for the woman, she nonetheless remained detained for weeks. This is only one of many examples of egregious due process violations that plague Central American immigrants, especially those who remain housed in detention centers.
