Over the years, the federal government has granted temporary protected status (TPS) to natives of certain countries, many of whom have fallen victim to natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes. The Trump administration is now taking steps to remove TPS from some groups of immigrants, based on the belief that the conditions that led to the need for TPS no longer exist. To that end, the Trump administration recently has cancelled TPS for thousands of immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Sudan. The government did extend TPS for natives of Syria for the next 18 months, but this group of immigrants still fears that their turn to leave the country will come in the near future, despite the fact that Syrians were granted TPS many years ago. Likewise, the Trump administration extended TPS for Hondurans for only six months, on the basis that it needs more information to make a decision about further extensions; Hondurans received TPS almost 20 years ago. In response to these developments, immigration advocates have been hurriedly screening immigrants with TPS to determine if they qualify for legal residency. For instance, a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision paved the way for immigrants with TPS to apply for permanent legal residency if they have a U.S. citizen child aged 21 or older, or a U.S. citizen spouse. However, advocates at the Central American Resource Center in Los Angeles estimate that only about 15% of immigrants with TPS qualify for this form of relief.
