ABC News is reporting that a Houston man has been charged with the unlawful practice of law for pretending to be an immigration attorney when he is no longer licensed to practice law in the state of Texas. The man reportedly represented himself as an immigration attorney and took thousands of dollars from unsuspecting immigrants seeking legal help. Instead, he performed no legal work for them, since he was not licensed to do so. At least one women alleged that she paid the man $1,000 to get her a visa so that she could legally remain in the country. The man didn’t perform the work as promised, and the woman did not want to be identified out of fear of retribution. The Special Crimes Bureau of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office fears that the man may have targeted a specific immigrant population who doesn’t know the legal system and would more easily believe him. They are urging other victims of the scam to come forward, reassuring them that they consider the immigrants to be crime victims, and are not in the business of deporting undocumented immigrants. The man continues to deny any wrongdoing, stating that he is still licensed in the state of New York, and was working with another Texas attorney to handle cases in the state. The State Bar of Texas, however, tells a different story. They report that the man voluntarily gave up his law license in 2016, rather than being disbarred. Their records indicate at least 40 different incidents in which the man took money to perform legal services for immigrants and then did little or no work for them. All in all, the State Bar estimates that the man took over $100,000 from these clients and then failed to do the promised work.
