Immigrants: The Backbone of America’s Economy and Society

At Landerholm Immigration, we firmly believe that immigrants are an essential part of what makes America great. Far too often, immigrants are unfairly blamed for societal issues, with myths and misinformation painted as fact. Let’s set the record straight: immigrants contribute positively to our economy, enrich our society, and help keep America strong.

The False Narrative of "Migrant Crime"

One of the oldest and most harmful myths is that immigrants are criminals. The reality is far different. In fact, immigrants are 60% less likely to be incarcerated than U.S.-born citizens. The idea of “migrant crime” is just a fear-based narrative, not rooted in truth. Crime rates in America are decreasing, and immigrants are not driving criminal activity. In fact, border cities, which have large immigrant populations, are among the safest in the country.

Immigrants Are Vital to Our Economy

Opponents of immigration often claim that immigrants are a burden on the U.S. economy and social programs. This is simply not true. Immigrants come to America for one reason: to build a better life for themselves and their families. Their contributions to the economy far outweigh any perceived costs.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that increasing immigration will add $7 trillion to the U.S. economy over the next decade. In addition, immigrants—whether documented or undocumented—are projected to increase tax revenue by $1 trillion, helping to reduce the national deficit and support essential government programs.

Immigrants Contribute More Than They Take

Research from the Cato Institute reveals that first-generation immigrants pay $1.38 in taxes for every $1 they receive in benefits. Undocumented immigrants contribute billions in taxes each year but are excluded from almost all federal benefits, simply because they don’t have documentation.

Immigrants Are Not Stealing Jobs

A common refrain from anti-immigration voices is that immigrants are taking jobs away from Americans. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Immigrants, particularly undocumented workers, often take on difficult, low-paying, and essential jobs that U.S. citizens are unwilling to fill. These roles are critical to the functioning of many industries, including agriculture, construction, and service.

Rather than causing unemployment, immigration has helped the U.S. maintain record-low unemployment rates. As the Baby Boomer generation retires, immigrants will play a crucial role in supporting Social Security by contributing to a strong, younger workforce.

Immigrants Drive Innovation and Business Growth

Immigrants are not just hard workers; they are also entrepreneurs. Immigrants are 80% more likely to start a business than U.S.-born citizens. Immigrant-founded companies make up 103 of the companies on the Fortune 500 list, showcasing their immense impact on the American business landscape.

Immigrants Enrich American Culture

Beyond economics, immigrants continue to contribute to the cultural richness of the United States. They bring new ideas, perspectives, and traditions that make America a dynamic, vibrant nation. Instead of vilifying immigrants, we should be celebrating their contributions.

Time to Embrace Immigrants

The time has come to speak the truth about immigration. Immigrants are not a threat to America—they are vital to its growth and success. They help keep our economy strong, create jobs, support social programs, and enrich our society. It’s time for America to open more legal pathways to citizenship and continue to welcome those who want to contribute to our nation's success.

At Landerholm Immigration, we believe in the positive impact of immigrants and continue to advocate for their rights and opportunities. Let’s continue to fight for a future where immigrants are not only welcomed but celebrated.
